After a marijuana-filled night of revenge fantasies, they form a plot to get even in real life. For a star-studded Hollywood comedy, 9 to 5 has some surprising roots in reality. The film is based on an idea by Fonda who was inspired by her friend Karen Nussbaum, co-founder of 9to5: The Organization of Women Office Workers. Nussbaum arranged for Fonda, screenwriter Patricia Reskin and director Colin Higgins to meet with forty women office workers to learn first-hand about the problems they faced on the job, plus the ways they dreamed of getting back their bosses.
